Want to Prevent Summer Slide?

Posted in Summer Camps

Summer learning at all Y camps happens throughout the day

Campers will experience the thrill of scaling to new heights on local climbing walls and low rope initiatives. As your camper engages with their group they will do goal setting, measurement, time keeping and other skills that will keep their math and critical thinking skills in focus over the summer months.

Each fall many youth get back to school having forgotten some of their skills from the last school year. Summer is a great time to learn and play at the same time. Y Summer camps are committed to infusing literacy activities into each day so that youth keep up their skills while having a great time. Activities range from daily reading and writing to producing and performing plays.

Campers will out get out and explore the world around them and have hands-on learning experiences. Field trips are aligned with weekly themes to make learning come alive for all ages of youth. Research shows that summer experiences and explorations are key to reducing summer learning loss.

Campers will have daily time to enjoy healthy activities that keep them physically active and participating in a team environment. Perseverance and team work skills developed in these activities are proven to correlate to increased skills in cooperative play and group work that lead to academic success.

Y Summer Learning Programs –
A commitment to preventing learning loss

Summer learning loss has been well researched and documented, with many students (particularly low income students) experiencing two to four months of loss in reading and math skills each summer.

The YMCA of Greater Seattle has made a commitment to providing aligned summer learning programs to eliminate summer learning loss and prepare young people for the coming school year. Thanks to the Y's summer learning programs, hundreds of students have enjoyed more successful school years. Building on this success, the Y will be expanding its proven programs to help prevent summer learning loss.

Too often, learning loss occurs over the summer and makes the school year a time of struggling to catch up instead of soaring ahead.  In fact, kids who don't have the opportunity to participate in summertime activities fall even further behind.

Some of the facts:
  • Students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer.
  • Most students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in math computation skills over the summer.
  • Many children—particularly children at high risk of obesity—gain weight twice as fast in the summer as during the school year.
  • Parents consistently cite summer as the most difficult time to ensure that their children have productive things to do.
  • More than half of the achievement gap between lower- and higher-income youth can be explained by unequal access to summer learning opportunities.
These problems can have an interactive effect. For example, research underscores multiple ways in which health affects motivation and the ability to learn. The Y is addressing summer learning loss on multiple fronts. We are introducing several new academic programs this summer, expanding our Summer Learning programs through Community Learning Centers and local public schools, and including learning opportunities throughout the day at all of our summer programs.
Note, programs are location-specific so please see your local Y for specific program offerings in your area.

Did you know?

More and more children in the United States are obese — and overweight children tend to become overweight or obese adults, leading to a host of health problems. Many people blame schools, but research shows the opposite.

In fact, children gain weight two times faster during the summer months, gaining as much weight during the summer as they do during the entire school year, even though the summertime is three times shorter.
